Portals are doorways leading from one dimension to the other. In the World Race, portals opened from Earth to Highway 35 in various places. On Highway 35, exit portals would return drivers back to Earth at the end of each leg. The returning portal would be placed near the next leg's portal. The final portal from Highway 35 was located near the first portal in the California desert.

The World Race portals appear to be powered by the Wheel of Power - when it was removed from Hot Wheels City, the portals closed and all vehicles currently on Highway 35 were immediately returned to Earth. The only way to re-open the portal to Hot Wheels City was by using the Wheel of Power itself.

In AcceleRacers, a hologram of the Wheel of Power is capable of opening the portals to the Racing Realms. The portal remains open for one hour during which time the drivers must reach the end of the Realm or be trapped. Drivers returning from a realm exit the same portal they entered.

Taro was caught between two Racing Drones in the Water Realm when they exited the realm taking him with them. Taro immediately left the Racing Drones headquarters finding himself back at the beginning of the realm. Taro made it to the portal a second time - this time returning to Earth.

A vehicle must be going at least 300 mph in order to pass through the portal.
